AUBURN — Traip Academy’s Keira Alessi and St. Dominic Academy’s Gabby Allen put on a goal-scoring show Tuesday afternoon.
Each notched a hat trick in the Western Maine Conference girls soccer game, but Alessi scored the game’s final two goals to break a tie and lift the Rangers to a 5-3 victory.
“I think, definitely, on our offense, we did a great job of switching fields and rotating over to get forward,” Alessi said. “We had a lot of great individual efforts, and we were able to move the ball forward and get those goals.”
Alessi credited her teammates for giving her good service balls to set up her three goals.
Traip coach Michael Jackson said the Rangers (2-0-1) just did enough to keep the Saints (2-1) at bay.
“I think that we had a difficult time adjusting to their attack, and the speed of their forwards,” Jackson said. “They were very dangerous going forward. I think that we kind of weathered the storm and scored two more goals than they did, but it was back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. I think the challenge for us was to kind of settle down.”
Jackson said Traip did better at controlling of the ball in the second half.
Allen had a partial breakaway early in the first half, but she was knocked down. On the ensuing penalty kick, she gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
The Rangers responded four minutes later when Alessi scored on a 2-on-1 to tie the game. Jacqueline Diallo had an assist on the goal.
St. Dom’s coach Jarrod Carnrick said the Saints need to improve their defense.
“Just a little bit more defensive organization and making sure we’re putting good pressure, but not trying to dive in and win the ball right away,” Carnrick said. “I think that’s kind of what killed us against really skilled players. We just got to stay low, delay and get numbers back.”
Allen notched her second goal midway through the opening half, giving St. Dom’s a 2-1 advantage.
Traip had a scoring flurry late in the first half when Meredith McGonigle’s long-distance shot sailed past St. Dom’s goalie Anna Therriault to tie the game. Diallo charged the 18-yard box and gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead in the 36th minute.
“We have a lot of people who can score goals, and I think that’s a great attribute to our team,” Alessi said. “We aren’t just relying on one person.”
Allen’s third goal for the the Saints evened the score early in the second half. Traip goalie Lily Stuart dove and got a hand on the ball, but before she got a fully grasped it, Allen kicked it into the back of the net.
Allen also scored three goals in St. Dom’s 8-0 win over Mountain Valley on Saturday. She also had one in the season opener, giving her seven goals through three games this season.
“She’s been on it so far,” Carnrick said of Allen. “First game took her a second to get going, but back-to-back hat-tricks now. It was very good of her to get those goals.”
Alessi gave Traip a 4-3 lead when her shot went inside the far post 20 minutes into the second half. She added an insurance goal in the 30th minute.
Traip faces Class B opponents Wells (3-2) on Thursday and Freeport (1-1) on Saturday.
“Yeah, I think we’re definitely going to use this game to help us,” Alessi said. “We have two more games this week and definitely come off this high well into those next two games.”
St. Dom’s, the defending Class D South champion, plays at Old Orchard Beach (1-3) on Thursday and hosts Sacopee Valley (0-3) on Saturday.
Carnrick said Tuesday’s loss will benefit the Saints for the remainder of the season.
“So it’s really just about being focused all-around, all 80 minutes, and I’m glad we finally had a game that put us through those moments,” Carnrick said. “Going forward, we’ve got a lot more games like that. We’re not going to be beating up on any teams, really, going forward. So we’ve got to be on it, and we’ve got to be focused, and it starts with some defensive work now.”
