AUBURN — Rescue crews were called Thursday night to Rodman Road after it was reported that a man was injured after driving into a passing train.
Police, fire and medical crews were called out at about 7:45 p.m. after a passersby reported that one person was injured. It was later reported that the driver was out of the vehicle and walking around.
The crash involved a freight train consisting of a locomotive and one empty tanker car, police said. The train was passing slowly through the intersection when it was struck by a 2020 Hyundai driven by 29-year-old Gerald Novach of Denboro, Pennsylvania.
The railroad warning lights and bell were functioning at the time of the collision, police said. This intersection is not equipped with crossing gate arms.
Novach’s vehicle collided with the rear of the black tanker car, police said, causing damage to both the train and the car. Novach’s vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.
Auburn fire crews treated Novach for minor injuries. Novach reported that he did not see the train or warning lights in time to stop. It is unknown why he did not notice either, police said.
The accident occurred in the area of 140 Rodman Road, not far from the intersection at Poland Road.
