LEWISTON — Police were investigating a pair of shootings Tuesday night in which at least two cars and a porch were struck by gunfire.
Just after 6:30 p.m., police were called to Ash and Howe streets where several shots were reportedly fired. Investigators said surveillance video revealed two males firing a handgun down Howe toward Pine Street.
Nobody was hurt, police said, but two parked cars were struck by rounds.
About 8:25 p.m., police were called to another round of gunfire downtown, this time in the area of Pierce Street, where several witnesses reported hearing gunshots. Two witnesses reported hearing at least five shots in the area. Police found numerous shell casings in the area of 116 Pierce St. Investigators also found bullet holes in a nearby porch. Again, no injuries were reported.
The shootings remained under investigation Wednesday. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lewiston Police Detective William Rousseau at wrousseau@lewistonmaine.gov.
City officials in recent months have been trying to find a solution for the near constant gunfire and other violence in downtown Lewiston since the start of the year. At the end of August, police and city leaders held a news conference to address the matter. Several less formal public meetings have been held on the matter, as well.
Many of the shootings have been without victims, but one was fatal.
In mid-July, 17-year-old Sahal Muridi was killed on Rideout Avenue and that incident remains under investigation.
Earlier this month, a car was peppered by gunfire on Pierce Street. No one was hurt but a round penetrated and shattered the rear passenger window and exited the front passenger side of the window.
