DEAR SUN SPOTS: Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin has a significant waiting list of adults who need to improve their English to connect with jobs and manage their day-to-day lives.

Volunteers are needed to serve as one-on-one tutors, as well as English Conversation Partners. Literacy Volunteers tutors and English conversation partners have helped hundreds of adults gain the skills they need to improve all aspects of life for themselves and their families. Helping them is a gift that lasts a lifetime.

Tutor training will be held at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College, 51 Westminster St., Lewiston, on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 26 and 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The two-hour English Conversation Partners training will be offered the first week in October, with the date and time to be determined by the participants.

If you are age 21 or older, have at least a 12th grade reading level, are patient, organized, and a good listener, you can be a literacy volunteer.

Registration is required. For information call 753-6658 (office), or email literacy@literacyvolunteersandro.org. Details can also be found on our website at http://www.literacyvolunteersandro.org. — Tahlia, no town

ANSWER: In my opinion, this is one of the most important volunteer positions there is — shepherding people into the world of reading, teaching them the English language so they can provide for themselves and their families, and perhaps passing the gift you’ve given them on to others by sharing their new skills.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Androscoggin Historical Society is looking for people with knowledge of local history, culture, industry, business, or the community who are interested in sharing their knowledge with others.

The society is compiling a list of interested individuals willing to become a resource for society members and those who look to the society for answers to their questions.

If you are passionate about an interest you’ve researched and are willing to share your findings with others, please contact the society at info@ androhistory.org or at 784-0586. Thank you for your support of our organization. — Penny, Lewiston

ANSWER: This is a great opportunity to become involved in the society where you can meet others, share what you know, and probably learn something new yourself. Join in if you can.
