MEXICO — One person died and another was rescued in a house fire Thursday morning on Tucker Street, Maine Department of Public Safety officials said Friday.
The identities of the females were not released, in one case because an autopsy was being conducted.
Fire and rescue crews were called to 5 Tucker St. about 7 a.m. for a reported house.
“First responders observed a fire burning, primarily from the front porch area,” according to a Maine Department of Public Safety statement Friday. “Firefighters were able to rescue one female from the residence using a ladder. She was not injured.”
“Once the fire was extinguished firefighters on scene discovered a deceased female inside the residence,” the release said. The Maine State Fire Marshal’s office responded to the scene as well as the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South to conduct an investigation.
The deceased female was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy was performed. The results are pending, the release said.
“The investigation remains open and ongoing at this time,” the statement said.
Fire departments from Mexico, Rumford, Dixfield, Peru and Andover responded to the Thursday morning blaze.
