DEAR SUN SPOTS: My husband has dementia and is content to sit outside for long periods of time watching the birds, wildlife and traffic passing by. The other day, I spent the morning baking, and as I was tidying up the kitchen, Michelle, my rural mail carrier, rang the doorbell. She let me know she had seen my husband on the road quite a distance from the house. It was the first time he had wandered away, and he was nearly 2 miles from home.
I am so grateful to Michelle and others who serve the public, are aware of their surroundings and notice when something is not right. Heaven only knows where he might have gone if Michelle had not seen him.
Thank you to my hero.—No name, no town
ANSWER: I am sure that really scared you, and I am so glad Michelle noticed your husband and notified you. It might be time to have your husband wear a medical alert device to give you both peace of mind and help keep him safe. There are many options, and his medical professionals might have one they prefer for patients.
Readers, you could also help by recommending GPS tracking devices with which you are familiar. AngelSense, Project Life Saver, Pocket Finder Smart Tracker, iTraq Nano, Spark Nano 7 and GPS Smart Sole can be used for your loved ones, including children. This is a good article about all of them: www.ourparents.com/products-for-seniors/location-devices-dementia.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Gardner Roberts Memorial Library at 25 Ferry Road in Hanover is planning its 15th Annual Fall Festival for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. It is to include live music, a yard sale, a book sale, a crafts and craft material sale, a food court, many beautiful raffle baskets and a quilt raffle. Plans also include a wishing well for children.
This is our big fundraiser and all proceeds go to the library.
Thank you for your valuable service. I look forward to reading Sun Spots every day.—Lynne, no town

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
