AUBURN — A Lewiston man was summonsed Tuesday morning after striking a child in a crosswalk on Minot Avenue in front of Fairview Elementary School, according to police.

Alberto Nafoia, 29, was operating a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan west in a posted 15 mph school zone around 8:30 a.m. when he struck a 7-year-old boy attempting to cross traffic near the school, according to an Auburn Police Department Facebook post.

The boy was treated at the scene for minor injuries and transported by Auburn Fire and Rescue to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for further evaluation, the post said.

Police said a school crossing guard, holding up a stop sign equipped with flashing LED lights, stepped out to stop traffic when Nafoia was approaching the crosswalk. Nafoia did not see the crossing guard and child, police said.

The crossing guard and other witnesses provided written statements to police.

Nafoia was charged with driving to endanger and was issued a traffic citation for “operator failing to obey crossing guard,” the post said.
