PARIS — Gabby Gerry’s two goals and Layla Facchiano’s three assists were part of a quick second-half onslaught that gave the Edward Little girls soccer team a 3-1 victory over Oxford Hills on Tuesday.
The win is the first over the Vikings for Gerry, Facchiano and the rest of the Edward Little seniors.
Gerry called the win “so relieving.”
“It feels so good. It feels really, really good,” Red Eddies junior Kaisley Marquis said. “I know our seniors have been wanting to beat Oxford Hills for quite a long time, and as a junior I’m really happy to help them accomplish that.”
Vikings (2-4-1) senior Abby Johnson scored the games first goal a little more than 17 minutes into the first half, off an assist by Graycee Richardson.
Oxford Hills’ 1-0 lead held up until Edward Little (2-4-1) evened the score on Gerry’s first goal 28 minutes into the second half.
“It was a gorgeous ball by Layla Facchiano, and it accidentally deflected off an Oxford Hills player, and I kind of turned out and did a little ka-ching with my right foot and … yeah, top left” Gerry said.
Marquis was next to find the back of the net, five minutes later.
“Similar goal (to Gerry’s),” Marquis said. “I was coming up the right side and Layla took a shot — beautiful — and it deflected off the goalie and I kicked it in for our second goal.”
Gerry’s second score came less than a minute later, off a through-ball from Facchiano, about 25 yards away from the goal. Gerry navigated past a Vikings player and booted the ball into the top corner — this time, she said, with her left foot.
Edward Little coach Tyler Shennett said Facchiano is the catalyst for the Red Eddies’ offense.
“Last season, she was actually our top assist-getter, so this is not anything new for her, it’s not new territory,” Shennett said. “She is very used to setting up and was dominant today in midfield-forward. I literally had her all over the place and ran her ragged, but the team doesn’t tick without her. She’s the midfield maestro and helps things work.”
Facchiano said the Eddies were expecting a competitive game Tuesday, especially with the Vikings looking bounce back from a recent loss to Lewiston.
“We actually didn’t know Oxford Hills didn’t have two of their best players there (against Lewiston), but once we were down by one, we were kind of like, ‘Hmm what’s going on,’” Facchiano said. “But then coach told us they did not have those two players. We were like, ‘Oh, we need to work harder, it’s not just going to come to us.’ So we definitely just wanted it so bad, I think that’s why we won.”
Shennett said the Red Eddies struggled in the first half against Oxford Hills’ Gigi DeVivo, who used her speed to isolate Edward Little forwards and prevent multi-player scoring opportunities. Shennett adjusted at halftime, involving more midfielders in the attack and moving a center back up to support the midfielders.
“We had to play the counterattacking game, just with the speed (Oxford) had, and we had to catch them on their heels,” Shennett said. “Hat trick of assists to Layla today, she really helped that, so huge shoutout to her and Gabby because their chemistry is going to be missed next year.”
Edward Little goalie Lola Cunningham finished with eight saves on nine shots, while Maddy Herrick totaled 10 saves on 13 shots for Oxford Hills.
Oxford Hills coach Brittany Moore said Herrick has “come in clutch at some of the toughest moments,” but often needs a reminder that the goals scored against her are not entirely her fault. That was especially true in Tuesday’s game, she said.
“She carries that weight, and sometimes, it’s not her weight to carry when a ball goes in,” Moore said. “I can think of two of the goals, exactly, where it fell apart and it’s not that it fell apart with her. She makes some insane saves.”
