LEWISTON — McMahon Elementary will be closed Wednesday to clear a sewage drain, school officials said in a letter to families Monday.
“Unfortunately, we are unable to get a vendor to come address it off school hours,” the letter said. “To get this done with some notice, we have scheduled this for Wednesday.”
Schools officials were alerted to the issue last week, when the drain backed up and caused some raw sewage to bubble up in the boiler room. “The backup was mitigated but revealed a larger series of problems in the drain system,” the letter said.
According to school officials, drain work that includes jets and cameras in the pipe is needed. A cleanout is set to take place following the work. Professional cleaners will be on standby.
“We believe this will disrupt school only for the day and we can resume once we know the drains are working properly,” the letter said. Spaces will be sanitized if necessary, it added.
