Kylian Mbappé came off the bench but couldn’t prevent defending champion Real Madrid from losing 1-0 at unheralded Lille in the revamped Champions League.
With Mbappé a substitute after a minor hamstring injury, the only goal came from Canada striker Jonathan David’s penalty deep into first-half stoppage time.
It was Madrid’s first loss in the competition since a 4-0 hammering by Manchester City in the 2023 semifinal return leg.
• Liverpool won 2-0 at home against Bologna, thanks to goals from midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and prolific forward Mohamed Salah.
• Substitute Jhon Duran scored a late winner to give Aston Villa a 1-0 victory against Bayern Munich.
• Juventus had goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio sent off in the 59th minute but still won 3-2 at Leipzig.
U.S. MEN: Mauricio Pochettino’s first big player move as U.S. coach was to bring back goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who started nearly half the 2022 World Cup qualifiers but was exiled by Gregg Berhalter.
“He deserved the opportunity to be with us,” Pochettino said Wednesday after announcing his roster for friendlies against Panama on Oct. 12 at Austin, Texas, and Mexico three days later at Guadalajara. “It’s a good opportunity to see him and analyze.”
Steffen, 29, has 29 international appearances and has started all 31 Major League Soccer games for Colorado this season after playing in just two Premier League matches over 4 1/2 seasons during his contract with Manchester City. He hasn’t played for the national team since March 2024.
Midfielder Gianluca Busio was the other notable addition to the 25-man group, which includes 19 players from this year’s Copa America and a dozen from the 2022 World Cup, including Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie. Busio, 22, helped Venezia gain promotion to Serie A this season and played for the U.S. at the Paris Olympics.
ARGENTINA: Lionel Messi will return to Argentina’s national team for South American World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Bolivia.
The 37-year-old star missed recent matches because of an ankle injury.

NBA: Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic injured a calf during preseason practice and will be re-evaluated in a week.
The Mavericks are in Las Vegas for training camp, and the club didn’t indicate if Doncic was with the team or stayed in Dallas. The team held media day Monday before opening a three-day camp in Nevada on Tuesday.
• The Los Angeles Clippers signed guard Terance Mann to a contract extension.
Mann averaged 8.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 51% from the field in 75 games last season.
WNBA: The Atlanta Dream fired Tanisha Wright after three seasons as head coach, the franchise announced.
Wright coached Atlanta into the playoffs the last two seasons, but the Dream were swept both years in the opening round of the postseason. They were 15-25 during the 2024 regular season.
BASEBALL
MLB: Teams increased their success rate on video reviews to 53.7% this season, led by the Boston Red Sox at 67.9%.
The percentage of successful team-initiated reviews was up from 48.5% last year and 50.2% in 2022.

• The Toronto Blue Jays are moving Don Mattingly back to the position of full-time bench coach after the six-time All-Star also spent the 2024 season as the team’s offensive coordinator.
• Fernando Valenzuela is stepping away from his broadcast duties with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the rest of the season so the former major league pitcher can focus on his health.
Valenzuela, who turns 64 on Nov. 1, is a Spanish language broadcaster for LA. The team said he is hoping to return for next season.
