DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a few hundred greeting cards that I would like to give to some organization. They are new, never used, with matching envelopes and clean. I thought maybe a nursing home could use them for their patients to help cheer their day. They include birthday, sympathy and get-well cards. If interested call Linda at 225-3328. — Linda, no town

ANSWER: What a wonderful gesture! We’re sure they would be appreciated by nursing home clients.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have several grape and cherry tomato plants with fruit that is still green. Is it possible to bring them inside in containers to continue maturing when the weather gets too cold for them? — No name, no town

ANSWER: According to homesandgardens.com, you can grow tomatoes inside, even from seed. You need a large pot with a diameter of at least 12-24 inches. A 5-gallon container usually has a diameter of about 12 inches, which is ideal for smaller varieties of tomatoes. The pot must have good drainage holes and be sure to place a tray underneath to catch the drainage. Use high-quality soil such as multipurpose organic compost, and water well.

Lighting is crucial, so pick the sunniest spot in your house, a south-facing window, sunroom or enclosed porch. Tomato plants need six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day. Daytime temperatures should be between 65 and 75 degrees F. You may need to supplement the sunlight with artificial grow lights, such as fluorescent or LED lights. If you are relying solely on sunlight, be sure to rotate the plants to avoid bending.

Tomatoes are self-pollinating, but you might want to help them along with an oscillating fan to mimic the wind, or you can give the blossoms a gentle shake to release pollen. If fruit is already set, simply wait for it to mature — and enjoy!
