Social Security has been an important foundation of my adult life, allowing me to be independent and productive.

When I was 3 years old, I needed life-saving surgery in Boston. During the surgery, I experienced an anoxic event that caused serious brain injury.

Despite several resulting disabilities and after many years of therapy, I graduated from high school in 1986. I then started my course of self-advocacy and service to others, living independently in my own apartment.

This was made possible because of Social Security benefits. So, we must remember that Social Security is more than an important retirement benefit. It is also vital to people with disabilities.

I have been able to contribute to my community by serving on many disability advocacy boards over the decades. Also, I am very active in a self-advocacy group. These groups support me in my efforts to effect needed change. I continue to testify before the Maine Legislature concerning the rights of people with disabilities.

Over the years, I have become a poet, a self-advocate, and a spokesperson for disability rights in Maine. It is very important to support Social Security for all of us and to secure self-determination for future generations.

We must continue to vote for candidates who are committed to preserving and strengthening Social Security.
