MADISON — Damon Martin scored five first-half touchdowns to spark the Poland football team to its first win of the season, 48-25 Madison on Friday.
Martin’s first-half TDs were scored in three different ways. First, he returned a fumble 107 yards for the first touchdown. The junior added a 5-yard TD run. That was followed by a 56-yard interception return for a score. Then came a 44-yard fumble return, and, finally, a 15-yard run.
The Knights (1-5) took a 35-7 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Martin connected with Liam Fifield for a 15-yard scoring strike. Lucas Verrill capped the Knights’ scoring with a 25-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter. Verrill also made 6 of 7 PAT kicks.
Martin completed 3 of 8 passes for 38 yards and a score. He also ran the ball nine times for 111 yards and two TDs. Verrill gained 70 yards on eight carries. Fifield caught two passes for 29 yards.
CAPE ELIZABETH 21, LEAVITT 14: Brady Inman ran 12 yards for the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, lifting the Capers (3-3) over the Hornets (2-4) in Cape Elizabeth on Friday.
Cape never trailed, though Leavitt twice erased seven-point deficits.
The Capers grabbed the lead on a 45-yard run by Eli Halter in the first quarter.
Leavitt tied it in the second quarter when Keegan Reny scored from the 1. Cape answered with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Inman to Aidan Connolly with just over a minute remaining in the first half, but Leavitt then drove the length of the field, capped by Brock Poulin’s 6-yard run as time expired.
THURSDAY GAMES
OXFORD HILLS 18, PORTSMOUTH/OYSTER RIVER 17: The Vikings (3-3) converted a two-point attempt after an overtime touchdown to beat the ClipperCats (0-5) in Portsmouth.
Portsmouth/Oyster River broke a 10-10 tie with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Andy Brown to Porter Lalime that made it 17-10.
The Vikings answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Carter Wyman. They elected to go for the win, and Brayden Murch scored on a two-point conversion pass from Wyman.
Brady Delamater forced overtime with a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. He scored earlier in the period on a 3-yard pass from Wyman.
The game was scoreless until Brown’s 12-yard TD pass to Cote Bellaud in the third quarter put the ClipperCats ahead 7-0. Bellaud also kicked a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Wyman completed 19 of 34 passes for 139 yards. Cole Pulkkinen caught six for 54 yards and Logan Bottomly five for 48 yards. Malaki Sparks led the Oxford Hills rushing attack with 52 yards on 15 carries.
The Vikings have won three straight games. They host Edward Little next Friday.
GREELY 38, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 22: The Patriots (3-3) fell on the road to the Rangers (5-1) in an 8-man Large School contest in Cumberland.
Gray-NG quarterback Kobi Conant threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for a score. He completed 20 of 32 passes for 214 yards and ran for 64 yards on 11 carries.
Both of Conant’s TD passes were to Kody Tracy, one for 51 yards and the other for 19 yards. Tracy finished with two catches for 70 yards. Isaac Ormberg caught eight passes for 110 yards and ran nine times for 53 yards. Cole Prescott made one reception for 34 yards.
Gray-New Gloucester hosts Telstar next Friday, while Greely has a big matchup with Mt. Ararat in Topsham on Saturday.
WINTHROP/MONMOUTH/HALL-DALE/KENTS HILL 35, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 8: Cody Cobb’s three second-quarter touchdowns helped the Ramblers pull away from the Falcons in Winthrop.
Cobb broke the scoreless tie with a 1-yard TD run. Later in the period, Glaia Ngongo blocked a punt and Cobb picked up the ball and returned it 8 yards for another score. He then added an 11-yard touchdown run.
Gabe Robinson and Ben Porter both had 1-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter. Cobb set up both scores, first with a 24-yard run prior to Robinson’s TD and then a 35-yard scamper before Porter’s TD.
Mountain Valley’s lone touchdown was a 75-yard run by Diquari Thompson in the fourth quarter. Blake Small ran in the two-point conversion.
Cobb finished with 99 yards rushing on 10 carries. Carter Rivers ran the ball 14 times for 142 yards, with 124 of those in the first half.
