Maine’s spooky season is upon us.
You used have to wait until Halloween to get your fill of scary fun. But in recent years, October has become a monthlong celebration of fright, ghost stories and graveyards.
There are now scary happenings all month long in Maine, from haunted houses and scary walks in the woods to tours of graveyards and other spooky spots. Here’s some of the frightful fun you can have this weekend and for the rest of the month.
WALKS ON THE WILD SIDE
The Trail of Terror haunted walk in Saco adds new frightful features every year. This year, it’s the Doll House of Doom, and we all know how scary dolls can be. (Last year it was an evil clown tent.) The trail is on the grounds of the Aquaboggan water park, in the woods, with tons of spooky folks jumping out at you from all around. It’s open nights, every Friday and Saturday from now until Nov. 2, plus Oct. 13, 27 and on Halloween. Admission is $20, $10 for children 10 and under. For more information, go to TrailofTerrorMaine on Facebook.
Farmington Fright Fest is actually three different walk-through attractions, all at the Farmington Fairgrounds and each with its own genre of terror. Mr. Marbles Maze is a twisted playground ruled by deranged clowns, the Crematorium is a horrific laboratory where weird experiments take place, and Granny Grimm’s is a crumbling gingerbread house filled with nightmares. It’s open Fridays and Saturdays through October, plus Nov. 2. Admission is $25, $15 for children 12 and under. For more information, go to mefrightfest.com.
The Haunting at Parsonsfield Seminary has been scaring the stuffing out of Mainers for nearly 20 years. This massive haunted house, billed as Four Floors of Fear, is in a 42-room dormitory built in 1832, in a small town on the New Hampshire border, about an hour from Portland. It’s open Friday and Saturday nights until the end of October. Admission is $18 on Friday, $20 other days and $5 for 12 and under. For more information, go to The Haunting at Parsonfield Seminary on Facebook.
Haunted Grandview Manor in the southern York County town of Lebanon is a haunted house and outdoor haunted walk, on one property. There are full-scare nights, with tickets at $25, and no-scare nights, with a price of $10. It’s open Thursday through Sunday, until Nov. 2. For more information, go to hauntedgrandviewmanor.com.
A GRAVE SITUATION
Take a lamplight tour of York’s Old Burying Ground as part of the Gone, But Not Forgotten cemetery walk. The hourlong tour features guides dressed as 18th-century townsfolk, taking people through the hundred or so graves, stopping to tell stories about the lives of the dearly departed. The tours are happening Thursday and on Oct. 24. Tickets are $20. For more information, go to oldyork.org.
A performance and tour called Walk Among the Shadows: Portland Rum Riot 1855 will be held at Portland’s famed Eastern Cemetery. It features tales of that notorious event and stories about the people involved. You’ll hear from Irish tavern keepers, bootleggers, temperance supporters, satirists and others (or at least people acting those roles). The tours are Thursday through Sunday, for the rest of October. Tickets for the 40-minute walk are $10, $5 for 12 and under. For more information, go to spiritsalive.org.
CITY OF FRIGHTS
You might know Biddeford because it has some of your favorite restaurants or breweries. But find out what lurks in the city’s shadows during the Biddeford Haunts & Curiosities Walking Tour. Starting at the Briar & Bone gift shop, a local historian takes people on a 45-minute walk, telling tales of the strange, spectral and spooky aspects of the city. Some of the topics include the Saco River Curse, Prohibition-era scandals, the White Lady of Greenwood Cemetery and the ghost of City Theater. Tours are Thursday through Saturday for the rest of October and cost $15. For more information, go to Biddeford Haunts & Curiosities Walking Tour on Facebook.
Wicked Walking Tours in Portland’s Old Port mix comedy and terror. The 75-minute tours are guided by a professional actor/comedian, regaling people with tales of ghosts, witch trials and pirates, plus some stand-up comedy. Some of the tours this month are already sold out, but there are tours scheduled this Thursday and on Oct. 22, 25, 27 and 30. Tickets are $24.99 to $34.99. There are also some scheduled in November.
