BAR HARBOR — Staff writer Pam Harnden received five journalism awards Saturday, Oct. 19, at the annual Maine Press Association conference.

Harnden’s story about a Poland hunter finding two bucks locked together in Weld received a first place in the game story category. Judges comments received on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 22, noted, “What a wonderful tale, full of detail, action and conversational story-telling.”
An article about Rev. Susan Taylor, a new chaplain at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, and what chaplaincy work means to her received first place in the religion/spirituality category. “Really nice feature story that incorporates faith and life lessons. Well written – very enjoyable read,” from the judges comments.
A look at how weather was impacting Franklin County livestock producers received first in the business/economics category. “A well-written, well-sourced story about an all-too-familiar issue that farmers of all generations have faced. Story really conveyed the impact,” from judges comments.
An article about a stranger stopping a Mercer man who was driving erratically received second in the feature story category. “This is a terrific story. But what struck me most was how connected the reporter is to her community. Your newspaper and readers are well served,” judges comments noted.
A story about Kathi Karkos finding a pair of Luna moths and her study of them received third in the outdoors story category. “An interesting story about the way Luna moths live. Stories like this are sure to spark interest in the outdoors,” according to the judges.
