Donald E. Towle

AUBURN – Donald E. Towle, 87, of Auburn passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, at the Andwell Hospice House surrounded by his family.

He was born in Lewiston on Nov. 13, 1936, the son of the late Forrest L. and Geneva (Cota) Towle. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1955 and from the University of Maine at Orono in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, serving as president his senior year.

After teaching one year in Greenville, he entered the military where he was stationed at Fort Hood Texas. Following two years active duty he returned to teach and coach in the Auburn school system for 37 years. He retired from Edward Little High School in 1999, having served as head of the mathematics department for 11 years. He coached skiing from 1973-1981; during that time his teams won two state championships. He was also the head coach of the tennis team from 1973-1989.

He served 21 years in the U.S. Army Reserves as a member of the 76th Division (TNG) obtaining the rank of Lt. Col. and was a two time recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal as well as numerous letters of commendations.

He was married to the love of his life, Carlene Tardiff, in Winthrop on Dec. 30, 1961. He is survived by his wife of 63 years; his two sons, Thomas Towle and his wife Deborah of Augusta and Dr. Timothy Towle D.M.D and his wife Catherine of Poland, his daughter, Jennifer Geller and her husband Dr. David MD of Lexington, Mass. He also leaves behind five granddaughters, Hannah, Jocelyn and Madison Geller of Lexington, Mass. and Annemarie and Theresa Towle of Augusta; as well as his brother, Ronald P. Towle of Auburn.

The family wishes to express thanks to the Andwell Health Partners for their care and support.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Friday, Nov. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Fortin & Pinette Group, 217 Turner St., Auburn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 24 Sacred Heart Place, Auburn. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn.
