Hannaford, Maine’s largest grocery chain, is having a network issue that has shut down its website and prevented customers from paying with credit cards at some stores.
It was unclear Thursday afternoon how widespread the issue was, but a spokesperson said all Maine stores remain open. Some stores are “temporarily unable to accept credit cards,” the spokesperson said, declining to provide which locations.
Some customers said the problem began on Wednesday. Others said they had experienced similar issues earlier this month, too.
As of 5:30 p.m., Hannaford’s website showed a blank page with the company’s logo and a message that says: “Sorry! We’re having technical issues with our servers. We’re working as quickly as possible to restore service.”
“We’re working diligently to resolve the issue with minimal disruption,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience and thank our customers for their understanding and patience. We’ll provide an update when the issue is resolved.”
The company did not respond to questions about how widespread the server issue is, when it happened, what caused the failure or when it might be restored.
Customers with prescription questions are encouraged to contact the pharmacy.
Hannaford is owned by the Ahold Delhaize group. It was founded in Portland in 1883 and is headquartered in Scarborough.
