MECHANIC FALLS — The Town Council appointed residents to the school district’s cost-sharing committee and signed several contracts during its Tuesday meeting.
Named to the Regional School Unit 16 Cost Sharing Committee were school board Chairwoman Mary Martin, Town Council Chairman Darryl Young, and resident Danielle Loring, Minot’s town administrator.
The nine-member committee will be made up of three residents each from Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland to review the current cost-sharing formula for local funds raised by the school district above the state funding amount given to the district for Essential Programs and Services.
The facilitator for the committee, Suzan Beaudoin, was recently hired by the school district’s board of directors.
The committee will decide by majority vote whether to have the formula remain intact or changed.
If amended, the three towns will hold an election to vote yes or no to any modifications.
Also, Tuesday, the council endorsed a three-year contract with the Police Department, which will run from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028.
Councilors also approved a three-year agreement for telephone and internet service with National Telephone & Technology of Scarborough.
A five-year contract with Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. for solid waste processing and disposal services was also approved by the council.
The condition of the Before and After School Center behind the Municipal Building was discussed. The council had been made aware that the school program may be leaving the building and moving to Elm Street School in the near future.
Councilors agreed to have contractors give the town an idea of what would be needed, including ballpark estimates, to renovate the building for possible uses for the community.
