SUMNER — Police on Friday captured a man they say dragged an Oxford County deputy with his car earlier this month at a gas station off Route 26 in West Paris.
Kevin Michael Litchfield, 37, of West Paris was arrested on a slew of charges after deputies tracked him to a camp off Kittredge Brook Road in Sumner, police said.
Litchfield was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a police officer, driving to endanger, refusing to submit to arrest and violating conditions of release in connection with the Nov. 4 incident that left Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Andre Chasse with injuries.
Litchfield was also charged with drug crimes and probation violations in a federal warrant.
Investigators said that since the incident with Chasse, Litchfield had been staying “off the grid” with his girlfriend, 54-year-old Cynthia Pelletier, who was also arrested at the cabin. She was charged with hindering apprehension, criminal trespass and violating bail.
Police said Pelletier was a passenger in the car when Litchfield sped away from his confrontation with Chasse on Nov. 1.
Two other men, 50-year-old Jack Sisson and 28-year-old Christopher Waterman, were also arrested inside the cabin on charges of hindering police in their attempts to capture Litchfield.
Police said Litchfield and the others had broken into the cabin and had been staying illegally. The building is owned by someone who lives out of state.
Investigators said that at about 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 1, Litchfield was at the Rusty Lantern market on Route 26 when he was ordered by Chasse to get out of his vehicle — Chasse, police said, had recognized Litchfield as someone who was wanted by the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
Litchfield refused to submit to arrest, police said, and was involved in a brief scuffle with Chasse.
“During the struggle, Litchfield shifted the vehicle into gear and accelerated forward, driving into the adjacent field,” according to a police statement. “Deputy Chasse was dragged alongside the vehicle before falling off the driver’s side — nearly being run over. Litchfield drove back across the field and back into the parking lot before fleeing northbound on Route 26 at a high rate of speed.”
Police said they later found Litchfield’s vehicle abandoned on Fuller Hill Road in Woodstock. The Sheriff’s Office’s K9 Team attempted to track Litchfield but he was not found. Police from several jurisdictions had been searching for him by the time he was arrested in Sumner.
Litchfield, who has a criminal history of drug crimes in the Oxford County area, was taken to the Oxford County Jail in South Paris where he was being held without bail.
