ANDOVER — The final columnist in our series of columnist articles, Diana Nadeau, is a resident of Andover. She worked for a total of 24 years as a lunch lady at the local elementary school. “It took me 15 years to move from part time to full,” she said. During that time, she progressed from direct food service, to manager, to director. She greatly enjoyed her time working as a lunch lady. “I like to cook, I like to bake, and I like children, so it’s the best of both worlds to me.” One of her favorite parts of the job was that, “I get to see the best of the kids, because who’s not happy at breakfast and lunch?”

Eventually, she moved on from that career to working part time as a secretary for the Andover selectboard. She described it as “kind of a natural progression,” for her career. Her new job also lets her spend more time with her father, from whom she lives down the road.

“This job is only part time,” she said, “so I’m able to help him out with all those things, if he needs something.” She explained that part of the reason she left her career in food service was to take care of him, which has been easier with a part time job. She still uses her love of cooking to make him meals, which they share.

She does, however, miss parts of her job. “I miss engaging with the kids,” she said. Her favorite parts of the job were the stories that they would tell, and the various amusing interactions.

“I’ve heard some funny stories over the years. I should have written a book.” Her favorite age to work with, from her time in food service, were the elementary school students.

“Those are the fun kids, that draw pictures for you and give you valentines and treats and goodies at Christmas.” When asked if she would want to go back to that job, given the chance, she said, “I would, if given the opportunity. I certainly would.”
