Thanksgiving week starts off with lots of sunshine, but things turn active again Tuesday. We’re also closely watching a potential nor’easter for Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Monday will be sunny and quiet. Highs will be in the mid 40s.

Wet weather returns Tuesday, with rain through much of the day. A winter weather advisory is in place across the interior and mountains as we likely start the day with some freezing drizzle or rain, travel could be slick there through the morning.

High elevations will see a wintry mix Tuesday, the highest elevations could see a couple inches of snow or sleet. WGME graphic

We’ll then turn to plain rain for everyone outside the high elevations as we head into the afternoon, with rain ending in the evening. Around 0.5″ of rain looks to fall.

Wednesday will turn nice once again with more sun and highs in the 40s, though it does look breezy.

THANKSGIVING/BLACK FRIDAY STORM:

The most impactful timeframe this week will likely be Thursday into Friday.

There is the potential for the first significant nor’easter of the season, although confidence on impacts remains quite low.

A significant storm remains very possible on Thanksgiving and into Friday, but a major storm is by no means a guarantee. WGME graphic

POSSIBILITY 1: The European model, along with a few other models, have been consistently showing a significant nor’easter with a track close to the Maine coast Thursday into Friday. This would bring heavy coastal rain and strong winds, inland snow that changes to rain, and heavy mountain snow.

This would likely begin Thanksgiving morning, with the worst conditions Thursday evening and night, with the storm wrapping up Friday morning.

POSSIBILITY 2: The American model, along with a few other models has equally as consistently shown a much weaker storm with a further offshore track. In this scenario, we’d see light amounts of rain or snow, and the storm would begin late on Thanksgiving and continue longer into Friday.

At this time, given the model differences, each of these scenarios is equally likely, and it’s also very possible we see something in between- notable, but not extremely significant storm. Stay tuned to the forecast especially if you’re traveling!

One thing is for certain though- it will get cold beyond Friday with highs only in the 30s by the weekend. The first week of December is looking frigid.
