PARIS — The Oxford County Commission discussed options for coverage of Mexico by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office during its meeting Nov. 19.
The county has sent Mexico two contract options for coverage — one for 24-hour patrol and another for patrol from 7 a.m. to midnight, County Administrator Zane Loper said.
The prices are similar to what Bethel and Dixfield currently pay for coverage. Dixfield is covered from 7 a.m. to midnight, while Bethel has 24-hour coverage.
The sheriff’s office took over coverage of Mexico in October after the police department disbanded, and now responds to emergency calls there.
The town is trying to get its police department back together but simply wanted to look at options for emergency coverage from the county, Loper said. He didn’t expect any decision to be made in the near future.
“They’re still in the preliminary stages,” he said.
Commissioners stipulated that Mexico be made aware that the county would need some time to hire three or four new deputies if Mexico decided to move forward with a patrol from the sheriff’s office.
In other business, commissioners authorized the hiring of Robert Haas as a part-time corrections officer, at $20 per hour.
Commissioners have also scheduled a meeting with the two newly elected incoming commissioners — Lisa Keim, a former Republican senator from Dixfield who won the District 2 seat, and Howard “Sawin” Millett Jr., former House District 81 representative, who won the District 1 seat.
The meeting will take place at 4 p.m. Dec. 12.
The next meeting of the Oxford County Commissioners will be a workshop at 9 a.m. Dec. 5
