I’d like to thank my neighbors for recognizing the threats to our democracy. Although Vice President Kamala Harris didn’t win the election nationwide, she prevailed in Maine.
Those who didn’t vote or who voted for Donald Trump have delivered a blow to all that we Americans hold precious, a blow from which we may not recover as a free democratic republic. If we do get through four years intact, the lessons learned will be painful for all Americans.
I say this as one who has lived for 80-plus years. traveled extensively and hasn’t much to lose except the dignity and pride in belonging to a country long considered a beacon of hope for the entire world, a country strong enough to guard its liberty and cast a protective cloak over those unable to protect themselves.
We have been a model of a successful democracy for the world. Now we are seen as a potential risk, a danger to all our allies. It is sad that we have not learned the lessons history provides.
If we care to, we can reflect on a world in conflict in which weaker countries are overwhelmed by dictators, fascists and autocrats. We can imagine how it would be to live in Hungary, Russia or North Korea. These are autocracies in which citizens have forgotten freedom and have never known democracy. Their lives are controlled by an all powerful leader. They have no voice, their desires are irrelevant.
Is this the future Americans want?
