AUBURN — Emily Andrews broke the deadlock. Her sister, Madeline, clinched the victory.

St. Dom’s/Lisbon snapped a scoreless tie with less than five minutes remaining and went on to a 2-0 win over Greely/Gray-New Gloucester in a girls’ hockey game Wednesday at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.

Emily Andrews ripped a shot from the right circle into the top corner of the goal. The puck squirted quickly out of the cage, so she gathered it and shot it again.

“I just saw it and I went for it. I was surprised it went in,” Andrews said. “I didn’t think it went in. I shot it again after because it went out of the net.”

The senior has been a forward throughout her career, but this season has been moved to defense.

“She’s a naturally a strong forward,” St. Dom’s Coach Paul Gosselin said. “She likes to go and we give her the green light to do it. She had a nice rip.”

Alana Wheeler made 12 saves for the shutout. Charley Louie stopped 31 shots for the Rangers (0-3), frustrating St. Dom’s until Emily Andrews finally broke through.

Madeline Andrews added an insurance goal with less than two minutes to play, a low shot that found a path to the goal.

“Honestly, I didn’t see it go in,” said Madeline, a sophomore. “I just kind of aimed for the net and it went in.”

St. Dom’s (1-1) peppered Louie in the first period, but the Greely goalie made 12 saves, including a breakaway stop of freshman Julie Quagliaroli early in the game.

“Yeah, I think it was a little frustrating for the first couple of periods,” Gosselin said. “A little too much individualism, we weren’t passing the puck. … They are working hard; the other team is working hard, they have a big goalie. Our shot selection wasn’t great, we hit her a lot in the chest with a lot of openings (to shoot at). Bad on us, but we will work on that.”

Louie stopped all 10 shots she faced in the second, while Wheeler, a freshman, turned aside four shots. St. Dom’s nearly made it 1-0 early in the period when a shot hit the post and almost rolled in.

“She’s really a good goalie, definitely up there in the league,” Emily Andrews said of Louie. “I think we had to change our approach to shooting. We were shooting very high, and we also had to change our approach to passing.”
