In an undated letter to town officials that Erik Baker shared with the Sun Journal on Thursday, he said he was resigning from his posts effective at the end of the business day Dec. 13.

“I have given my entire career to public service and I find it is time for me to step away,” he wrote.

Baker didn’t cite specifics.

“There is no other reason that I am resigning than to do what is best for myself and my family,” he wrote.

Baker was hired in March 2022.

Since then, he moved the police department from what he characterized as “almost disbanded” to full staffing levels that included seven full-time members and two reserve officers.

The department also was able to gain accreditation through the Maine Law Enforcement Accreditation Program in the 2½ years during his tenure, he wrote.

“I would like to thank the board for the opportunities that I have experienced since being hired,” he wrote.

He also thanked the community for its “show of support” during his time with the town.

“I have been able to get to know all the employees from each department within the town,” he wrote. “Sabattus has a great group of employees who care about the town and they are the true unsung heroes that keep the town moving.”
