PORTLAND — Eleven players scored for Poland in its season-opening 59-24 girls basketball victory over Waynflete on Friday.
Knights (1-0) sophomore Charlotte Grenier topped all scorers with 15 points. Phoebe Paradis and Payton Rose each added eight points and Alaina Hamlin had seven.
Lauren McNutt-Girouard led Waynflete (0-1) with 10 points.
WINDHAM 51, LEWISTON 10: Mackenzie Delewski scored 11 points and Stella Jarvais added 10 as the Eagles rolled past the Blue Devils in a season opener in Windham.
Sophomore Joana Almeida led Lewiston with five points and freshman Bailey Toderico had four.
BOYS BASKETBALL
FREEPORT 53, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 49: Conner Smith scored 19 points and the Falcons won their season opener against the Patriots in Gray.
Bruce Dwyer added 13 points and Drew Pound 11 for Freeport.
John Patenaude had 22 points for Gray-New Gloucester.
MT. BLUE 68, LAWRENCE 50: Nolan Leso and Tyler Abell paced the Cougars (1-0) to a home win over the Bulldogs (0-1) in Farmington.
Leso made nine field goals and went 6 of 7 and the free-throw line for 24 points, while Abell drained four 3-pointers and was 6 for 6 on foul shots for 18 points. Tucker Fitch added nine points for Mt. Blue.
Cole Quirion hit four 3s and finished with 14 points, while Brayden Davidson scored 10 and Brady Richardson had nine for Lawrence.
POLAND 58, WAYNFLETE 53: The Knights (1-0) overcame a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Flyers (0-1) in Poland.
Poland entered the fourth trailing 48-33 but rallied back and took the lead, 52-51, on a 3-pointer by Damon Martin with less than two minutes remaining. The Knights outscored Waynflete 25-5 in the final period.
Martin led all scorers with 24 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Teammate Nick Jamo hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 points. Waynflete’s JJ Carlo drained six 3s and finished with 24 points, while Malcolm O’Wril added eight points.
WINDHAM 85, LEWISTON 54: The reigning Class AA champions sank six 3-pointers during a 34-14 surge in the second quarter as they rolled past the Blue Devils in Lewiston.
AJ Moody led the offense with 19 points and added six steals. Braycen Freese scored 18 points, and Creighty Dickson had 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Joao Samba scored 15 points for Lewiston.
MARANACOOK 55, MONMOUTH 43: Jack Fontaine scored 24 points to lead the Black Bears (1-0) to a win over the Mustangs (0-1) in Monmouth.
Elijah Freeman added 17 points for Maranacook.
Bingham Abbott led Monmouth Academy with 20 points.
OAK HILL 49, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 44: Braden Dubuc, Eli Desmond and Braden New led a balanced scoring attack as the Raiders (1-0) opened the season with a home win over the Falcons (0-1) in Wales.
Dubuc, Desmond and New each scored nine points for Oak Hill, while Isaac Graham added eight points.
Ben DeSalle put up a game-high 20 points and Dylan Theriault scored 14 for Mountain Valley.
SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 69, BOOTHBAY 36: Jace Bessey scored 28 points to pace the Phoenix to a win over the Seahawks in Jay.
Cai Dougher finished with 16 points and Owen Kelvey had 10 points for Spruce Mountain.
Tyson French led Boothbay with 14 points.
FOOTBALL
AWARD: Portland High junior Cordell Jones was named Friday as Gatorade Maine Football Player of the Year.
Jones was listed as a wide receiver on offense but was used in various positions, including as the quarterback in the Wildcat formation. He rushed for 971 yards and 16 touchdowns and caught 26 passes for 533 yards and eight touchdowns while helping the Bulldogs win the Class A state championship.
As a defensive back, Jones had 29 solo tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
