LEWISTON — A local man who police said fled into nearby woods after crashing his SUV Saturday on Old Greene Road appeared in court Monday on six related charges.
Eric Ouellette, 44, had been staying with his mother at her Loon Drive home, where he threatened her on Saturday after his sister had reported to her that he had damaged the house, Assistant District Attorney Jaclyn Salevsky told 8th District Court Judge Sarah Churchill.
Ouellette started yelling at his mother while she stood in the doorway, Salevsky said. “He threw knives into the door and was throwing an axe into the wall,” she told the judge.
His mother told police she was afraid that her son would hurt her, Salevsky said.
Officers went to the home and saw marks on the wall, including one that was consistent with the back of an axe hitting it, Salevsky said. The axe was not located.
Later Saturday, Ouellette was involved in a rollover crash at about 12:30 p.m. when his 2007 GMC Yukon crashed near the intersection of Old Greene and No Name Pond roads, police said.
Because Ouellette’s license was revoked, he tried to flee the scene “to not get caught driving,” Salevsky said.
Using a tracking dog, police found Ouellette in the woods off No Name Pond Road and arrested him, Salevsky said.
She asked the judge to set bail on the new charges at $5,000 and to have Ouellette held without bail on the earlier pending charges.
The new charges include domestic violence criminal threatening and operating after revocation, both felonies, each punishable by up to five years in prison.
He also was charged with four misdemeanors, including threatening display of a weapon and domestic violence terrorizing.
Ouellette did not enter any pleas because some of the charges were felonies and had not been presented to a grand jury for indictment.
Justin Leary, who represented Ouellette on Monday, argued that his bail should be set at $1,000 and told the judge that Ouellette has a place to live in Sabattus where he works doing auto body repair.
Judge Churchill set bail at $3,000 cash for both cases and appointed lawyers to represent Ouellette, who is indigent.
She set conditions on his bail that included no possession of dangerous weapons, including axes, for which he may be searched at random. He must have no contact with his mother or return to her home or workplace.
Ouellette appeared in court by videoconference from Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
