DEAR SUN SPOTS: Mexico Congregational Church, UCC (the “Green Church”) at 163 Main St. in Mexico, will observe Christmas Eve with a service of Carols and Candles on Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. All are welcome to join in a celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. — Carol, Mexico
ANSWER: It’s so nice to know that area churches still have special Christmas services and that all are welcome whether they are a member of the congregation or not. Singing spiritual Christmas carols is timeless, good for the soul, and there are many opportunities to take part in this tradition, no matter where you live or where you are in your life.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Trinity Jubilee Center at 247 Bates St. in Lewiston (207-782-5700) would love donations of adult-sized boots, coats, hats, and gloves for our homeless and low-income neighbors. Gently used, but clean is absolutely fine! — No name, no town
ANSWER: I have learned that other urgent needs for the center include diapers in sizes three, four, five, and six, coffee, powdered creamer, sugar, and deodorant and underwear for men and women.
You can also help by purchasing items on their wish list here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3QTHNF3XWL4Q4/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex. There is also a more extensive list on here, as well as a list of items that the organization does not accept: https://trinityjubileecenter.org/donate/, and you can even donate your bottles and cans at Roopers Beverage & Redemption by writing “Trinity” on the bag.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any free knitting groups that meet in the daytime in the Auburn area? — Elaine, no town
ANSWER: Check out the city of Auburn and the city of Lewiston’s recreation departments for activities, as well as both cities’ libraries and churches, and knitting stores in the area.
SeniorsPlus has a knitting circle, according to their website, and Rosemary’s Gift and Yarn Shop at 39 Roosevelt Trail in Windham (207-894-5770) may also have knitting groups.
Sun Spotters, if you’re in a knitting group, please let us know if you have room for new members.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any Avon representatives in our area? My mom would like to purchase some items such as bubble bath. — No name, no town
ANSWER: Oh Avon! I miss you so. I still remember when the Avon lady came to our home, stayed for a cup of coffee and a chat, and left those lovely little lipsticks and other samples of good-smelling perfumes, lotions, and potions to make us even more beautiful than we already were.
The Avon ladies are called “ambassadors” now and you can still become one (my childhood dream!), although most of the selling is online these days at https://www.avon.com/. Many items are on sale for the holidays so if you want to get your mom that bubble bath for Christmas, now’s the time.
I also found Avon ambassador Heather Spaulding in Lewiston (207-689-1940). Here is the link for her online store too: https://www.avon.com/repstore/has?rep=has. Let me know if you need any other help with this!
