James was shot Tuesday at about 3 p.m. near the corner of Walnut and Pierce streets, police said. Officers who found him bleeding on Pierce Street applied a tourniquet and took him to Central Maine Medical Center where he remained on Wednesday.
Witnesses near the shooting scene described hearing multiple shots fired, followed by several people running away on foot and the driver of one car speeding away.
“Lewiston Police continued to work on this case throughout the night and into the early morning hours,” according to a news release. “The investigation remains ongoing as dozens of items have been collected as evidence and hours of surveillance footage have been viewed. Police continue to speak with witnesses.”
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Police on Wednesday released photos showing a cluster of what appeared to be young men, clad in masks, creeping up Walnut Street.

One photo depicts a man on the corner raising what appears to be a handgun and taking aim. Subsequent photos show the group of people running away from the scene.
The Tuesday afternoon shooting caused the temporary lock down of two school buildings. At least one building was damaged by gunfire.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting.
In 2016, James was wanted for questioning in connection with a shooting that had occurred on Bowdoin Street in Auburn, although it does not appear he was charged in that case. He also has convictions for drug trafficking in the Rumford area.
According to court records, James is from Massachusetts but has previously lived in Lewiston and in parts of Oxford County.
Lewiston police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individuals pictured. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Rousseau at wrousseau@lewistonmaine.gov.
