Auburn firefighters participate Thursday in a controlled burn training exercise on Hotel Road in Auburn. Firefighters trained on multiple burn evolutions throughout the morning before the entire home was set on fire during “rookie school,” a two-to-three-month period that is used to train new employees, said Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fifield. The house was donated by Cote Crane. “We don’t get these opportunities very often,” Fifield said about having a house to train in. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal

Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fifield of the Auburn Fire Department said that it is not very often that firefighters get to train in an actual house. Firefighters set up nine scenarios that were extinguished before the entire house was allowed to burn to the ground. “We got one more fire out of it that we anticipated,” said Fifield. Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fifield said his department battles a large number of porch fires each year, so firefighters trained in that scenario before the flames were allowed to spread to the entire donated house.
