AUBURN — Spencer Morgan’s late goal capped St. Dominic Academy’s come-from-behind 4-3 boys hockey win over Lewiston on Wednesday at Norway Savings Bank Arena.
Morgan scored the game-winner, his second goal of the game, with 35 seconds left.
“We had a good breakout out of the zone, and then I was planning on passing up to my line mate, but then they gave me the open ice, and I just took it,” Morgan said.
The Saints (3-0) scored the final three goals after falling behind 2-0 in the opening minutes and trailing 3-1 after one period.
The “grey” line of Morgan, Curtis Wheeler and Connor St. George was instrumental to St. Dom’s comeback, coach Marc Frenette said.
“We would put our most talented line out against (Lewiston), and they would have success, we just weren’t playing enough defense,” Frenette said. “But grey line was consistent in all three zones, got the winning goal and, right now, they’re playing like our first line. Grey line is our first line right now.”
Lewiston’s Austin Landry and Cam Plourde scored in the first three-plus minutes of the game to give the Blue Devils (2-2) an early 2-0 lead.
St. Dom’s Ben Dumais responded with a goal set up by Deano Scalia a couple minutes later to cut the deficit to one, but Lewiston’s Jacoby Oliviera scored late in the first period to make it 3-1.
“It’s always a tough game losing to St. Dom’s,” Blue Devils coach Sam Cloutier said. “It’s an emotional game, there’s always adversity you have to battle. The kids were fired up (in the first period), they were getting pucks to the net, and then I think as the game went on, we stopped getting guys to the net, we stopped taking our shots and I think that showed.”
Morgan scored his first goal in the second period, and Riley Daigle tied the game midway through the third period.
“I was expecting a good matchup; they’re a good team,” Morgan said. “We both have a lot of history and knew it was going to be a tight match, but we hoped that in the end we would come out on top, and we did.”
Dumais and Daigle also had assists for St. Dom’s, while Austin, Matt Levasseur, Colten Daniels and Nate Metivier set up goals for the defending state champion Blue Devils.
