AUBURN — The city is set to ring in the New Year on Tuesday when it hosts the 6th annual New Year’s Auburn celebration.

New Year’s Auburn is scheduled for 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday along Main Street and Festival Plaza in the downtown area, where a handful of bands, breweries and food vendors are to entertain the crowd, before a traditional fireworks display over the falls.

The event is expected to feature several breweries serving craft beer and cocktails under the tents in Festival Plaza. They are to include Craft Brew Underground, Geary Brewing, Gritty McDuff’s, Lost Valley Brewing, Nonesuch River Brewing, Olive Pit Brewing and Side by Each Brewing.

Food and other hot beverages are to be offered by Burnt Ends Barbecue, Gonna Love It, L.A. Taco, Lucky Cat Coffee, Nutty Netties and Rollin’ in the Dough.

Since the initial announcement, Liz Allen, Auburn’s director of communications and community engagement, said two food trucks have been added to the lineup: Tripp’s Farmhouse Café, with its “legendary” gluten-free menu, and Mr. Seas Lobster Pound & Fry Shack.

Allen said the event will be bittersweet because it will be the last for Side by Each Brewing, which recently announced its closure.

“The wonderful team from Side by Each has been part of our signature events for many years now,” she said, “but, sadly, NYA will be their last day in business and their last event with us. They will certainly be missed.”

A 1990s cover band, Hello Newman, is returning this year, and the LA Harley Band is scheduled to kick things off at 3 p.m. Fire in the Hole is set to close out the night.

When initially announcing the details for this year’s event, Downtown Coordinator Jennifer Boenig said Auburn’s event is “one of the few, if not the last,” city-organized New Year’s celebrations in Maine that is free to attend. The city estimated that some 5,000 people attended last year’s show, which featured a drone light show.

This year’s traditional fireworks display is scheduled to begin between 8:30 and 8:45 p.m.

Allen said organizers are “keeping a watchful eye” on the weather, but that it looks OK for Tuesday night.

“We encourage folks to bundle up and come on down to Main Street,” she said. “We’ll crank up the heaters and celebrate our way into a great new year.”

Allen said there is accessible, free parking in the Mechanics Row municipal parking garage “just steps away from the party” and that motorists and Main Street businesses should note that Main Street, from Festival Plaza to Gritty’s, will be closed to all traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday. Main Street is scheduled to reopen at about 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, she said.

Boenig said that with the road closure, attendees are encouraged to come to the event using Mechanics Row so they can easily get into the municipal parking garage. Overflow parking is planned at Great Falls Plaza, and attendees are encouraged to use the riverwalk to get to the event.
