BROWNFIELD — A fire Sunday destroyed a popular landscaping and garden business on Routes 5 and 113.

Firefighters responded to Heart and Hand Inc. at 750 Pequawket Trail about 3:30 p.m.

There were no injuries, Brownfield Fire chief Richard Perreault said.

He said he believes it started in the chimney and does not appear to be suspicious.

Flames were already shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived, the chief said, and it took firefighters about four hours to put the fire out.

Temperatures dipping into the teens and single digits made for some difficulty in fighting the blaze. Perreault spoke of slippery footing and keeping the fire trucks from freezing.

Seven surrounding fire departments assisted Brownfield in extinguishing the fire.

According to its website, Heart and Hand is a “family-owned full-service property maintenance, landscape and construction company.” The business includes a feed store for livestock and pets, a florist and nursery, as well as garden supplies.

The building was destroyed, but much of the landscaping equipment was not damaged, Perreault said.
