AUBURN — Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland/Monmouth/Oxford Hills coach Dana Berube knew it was a matter of time before the Red Hornets extended their lead over St. Dominic Academy.
“And, quite honestly, it was one of the things we told our girls that, you know, they may have a short bench, but they’re all good skaters,” Berube had. “They’ve got a very good goalie, and we’d have to be patient.”
The Red Hornets scored twice late in the second period to make it 4-0, en route to a 5-2 girls hockey win over the Saints at Norway Savings Bank Arena.
Leksi Langevin tallied two goals and an assist, and Avery Cologna had a goal and assist for the Red Hornets (6-4-2).
“I thought we moved the puck around good, took the opportunities,” Berube said. “You know, they’ve got a good, solid goalie, so you’ve got to get to the net for rebounds, and I thought we did that fairly well.”
Langevin, coming in with a burst of speed from the neutral zone, scored on a partial breakaway with under four minutes remaining in the opening period.
Kaylee Hudson potted a goal before the end of the period when she put home a cross-ice pass from Cologna.
After the teams played back-and-forth for most of the second period, the Red Hornets broke it open with another two-goal spurt. First, Cologna blasted a point shot past St. Dom’s goalie Alana Wheeler (29 saves). Then, Langevin was left alone in the slot, and her wrister found the back of the net.
“I think overall we played really well,” St. Dom’s coach Paul Gosselin said. “There were times when we didn’t, obviously because we’ve got a short bench and we’ve got an injury, so we’re playing with eight girls. And it (got) a little bit hard for us at the end of the second period. That’s really when the damage (was) done. I think in the first period and third period, we did exceptionally well. I was happy with it.”
Freshman Molly Theriault-Guay scored for the Saints (2-11) early in the third period off a rush, beating Red Hornets goalie Paige Fecteau (23 saves).
“We told Molly it was her best game of the year,” Gosselin said. “She did it really well, so she had a lot of energy and got rewarded with a goal, so that was nice.”
Gabrielle Langelier scored for the Edward Little co-op in the third period. Gabby Allen got the second St. Dom’s goal.
