My thanks to retired teacher Michael Bernier for giving Lewiston residents an uncensored look at our current school system. A system that is failing our children and financially affecting many of our struggling residents (“Retired Lewiston teacher’s viral video sparks conversations about struggles,” Jan. 18).
How can the Lewiston public expect its children to get an education when teachers are constantly breaking up fights, trying to keep order in classrooms and school corridors, evacuating classrooms because of unruly students, students failing to do assigned work, coming to school half-dressed and appearing to be attached to their cellphones? These are just some of the hardships our teachers face trying to teach Lewiston’s children.
It is time for our current administration to start strictly enforcing school rules. If that means a great number of students will not graduate or advance to the next grade, so be it. If administrators fail to comply, they should be replaced.
Lastly, our state legislators have been AWOL for years. It is time for them to step up and work with school personnel to create laws that bring our schools back to a place of learning.
