AUGUSTA — There was no denying the look of happiness on Jason Bagley’s face after a win early Saturday afternoon. For a brief second, though, that look gave way to confusion.

The Mt. Blue senior had just defeated Morse’s Dante Ingaharro to win his 190-pound consolation quarterfinal match at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference wrestling championships. As he walked off the mat, his family stood there with a sign congratulating the bewildered Bagley on 100 wins.

“I was super surprised; my parents told me I had eight left,” Bagley said. “I went back through it in my head, and I realized (I had been on) 99. (Them keeping it from me) probably helped because I would have gotten in my head so much. … It was a surprise all the way around.”

It was one of multiple milestones Saturday at Cony High School. Individually, wrestlers reached 100 wins, 150 wins and 100 pins, while the team competition featured competitive championship races won by Camden Hills (Class A, 188 points) and Mount View (Class B, 97 1/2 points).

Bagley was one of two Mt. Blue wrestlers to reach 100 wins Saturday as sophomore teammate Dillon Gray pinned Cony’s Riley Mooney in the round of 16 at 150 pounds to reach the century mark. Takuma Steinberger of Oceanside also reached the mark, pinning Morse’s Rick Wyatt-Jones in the round of 16 at 285.

Lawrence’s Colton Carter (190 pounds) reached the 150-win mark when he pinned Gardiner’s Weslyn Mullins in the round of 16. For Camden Hills, Justin Batty (157 pounds) recorded his 100th fall when he pinned Ava McGinnis of Nokomis in the round of 16.

“It was the first match of the day, so it was like a little warmup for me,” said Batty, the top seed at 157. “I just got my takedown and put it right to her back, and then I ended up working a couple moves and got the pin on the second move. … It feels awesome.”

Gray, Batty and Steinberger went on to win titles, while Carter finished second to Medomak Valley’s Grady Pease. Batty was one of five finalists for Camden Hills, who got another first-place finish from Michael Rollins (175) and runner-up finishes from Kergan Thomann (126), Connor Pease (144) and Cayden Fowler (285).

Placing wrestlers in more than one third of the 14 championship bouts helped Camden Hills surge past Oxford Hills (171 points) to win its third consecutive KVAC Class A title. Coach Pat Kelly said the Windjammers got a tougher challenge from the Vikings than he expected, but wins from Rollins and Landon Pease (150-pound consolation) made the difference.

“It was close — they were right on our tails and had a chance to do it — but we were able to get those couple key wins,” Kelly said. “They would win, and then we would win, and it just kind of went back-and-forth. They wrestled well today, which they always do, but we were able to prevail.”

Mount View received a stern challenge from Waldo County rival Belfast (94 1/2 points) in the Class B competition but ultimately prevailed. Josiah Miller (144) won an individual title for the Mustangs, while Dominic Stimpson (113) and Noah Parenteau (126) won their weight classes for Belfast.

“Everybody on this team works so hard; we get angry at each other sometimes, but we all love each other,” Miller said. “We’ve had a lot of sickness throughout the year, but we’re getting over it. … It feels great.”

Miller, the No. 4 seed at 144, took a remarkable path to his title. After comfortable wins in his first two matches, he beat Lincoln Academy’s Adam St. Cyr — the reigning state champion — in the semis before defeating Pease with a 2-1 decision.

“I’ve got to give credit to Coach Ham (Hamilton Richards) because he’s been preparing me to beat Adam the whole year, basically,” Miller said. “I still had Connor after that, and he was the only person at 144 beside Adam to beat me, so I was pretty nervous. I’m glad I was able to pull it out.”

Other individual winners were Mt. Blue’s Preston Garland (106), Mt. Ararat’s Evan Kowalsky (120), Lincoln Academy’s Cole Workman (132), Nokomis’ Stryker Fraser (138), Oxford Hills’ Bryce Hazelton (165) and Edward Little’s Merlin Smith (215).

Fraser (Class A) and Miller (Class B) garnered Wrestler of the Meet honors.  Mount View’s Richards and Oxford Hills’ Tony Stevens were named Coaches of the Year.
