Michael Nadeau clears snow Jan. 17 from the ice rink on the front lawn at his home in Sabattus. Nadeau, who grew up in Lewiston, says he has been skating on home ice rinks since childhood. He says his family began by making ice directly in the snow, then started using bits of wood, planks and boards. He says he transitioned recently to a ready-made, snap-together rink. Nadeau has four children and nine grandchildren. All of them skate, although not all play hockey. Nadeau says he still plays hockey in a men’s league in Auburn. Maintaining the ice rink takes him less than an hour after each snowfall, he says, and he uses a hand-dragged device to keep the ice in good condition. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal
