AUBURN — An Auburn woman was injured early Sunday afternoon when the car she was driving went off Main Street, struck a light post, a metal barrier fence and several trees and landed near the Little Androscoggin River on the other side of the street.

Police said the crash occurred at 1:23 p.m. as Rachel Walton, 40, was driving her 2011 Toyota Rav 4 north on Main Street near the retaining.

“Walton lost control of her vehicle and drove off the roadway, crashing through a light post, a metal barrier fence, several trees, and landing approximately 30 feet down the embankment adjacent to the Little Androscoggin River. Walton’s vehicle never made it into the water,” a post on the department’s Facebook page said.

Police said Walton was taken to Central Maine Medical Center and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

“Speed and distracted driving are likely a factor,” the police post said. “Walton also had a suspended license status at the time of the crash. This crash remains under investigation, with charges expected,”

Police said Main Street was shut down for just over an hour while the vehicle was removed.
