FARMINGTON — ArtsFarmington is set to offer its next program, “Unbought,” at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Emery Community Arts Center, 115 Academy St. A reception to follow at the North Church, 118 High St.
February is Black History Month, and March is Women’s History Month. This makes “Unbought” especially timely. It features the dramatic stories of three Black women played by Tiffany Terrell: Ida B. Wells, journalist and women’s suffrage activist; Sally Hemings, the slave with whom Thomas Jefferson fathered six children; and Shirley Chisholm, the first Black congresswoman from New York and first Black woman to run for president.
The title of the show derives from Shirley Chisholm’s memoir, “Unbought and Unbossed.” The musical score features jazz, folk, popular and classical works by Black composers as interpreted by a cellist, pianist and percussionist.
Admission is $20 and free for UMF students and children through the Arts Inspire Youth program.
Tickets are available at artsfarmington.org, with a limited number at the door.
