Each of the four boys hockey playoff games to be played over the next few days, the Class A semifinals and the Class B regional finals, is a rematch of at least one regular-season contest.
Only one, No. 4 Kents Hill (11-7-1) vs No. 1 Falmouth (14-3-2), is a rubber match after the teams split a pair of regular-season games.
“We have to show up ready to go right from the puck drop,” said Falmouth coach Hogan Tracy, whose team beat Kents Hill 5-1 on Dec. 10, then took a 5-0 loss to the Huskies on Feb. 19. “We have to clean up mistakes in the neutral zone. We can make things a lot easier if we take care of the little things.”
Falmouth, the top-ranked team in the latest Varsity Maine poll, and Kents Hill will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cross Insurance Arena, the middle game of a tripleheader. The Class B South final between No. 3 Gorham (13-7) and No. 1 Cheverus/Yarmouth (17-2-1), the defending state champion, starts things off at 4 p.m. The nightcap is the second Class A semifinal, featuring a matchup between the past two state champions, No. 2 Lewiston (14-5) against No. 3 Thornton Academy (15-3-1), at 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, No. 3 Messalonskee (15-5) will play No. 1 John Bapst (18-1-1) at Alfond Arena in Orono in the Class B North final at 6 p.m.
Kents Hill began the season as an unknown. The school has long competed against prep school opponents, and this season transitioned its former junior varsity program in a varsity club playing against MPA competition.
“Overall, it’s been great. We split with the top three teams (Falmouth, Lewiston and Thornton Academy),” said Kents Hill coach Bill Desmarais on his team inaugural season in the MPA. “It’s given them something to play for. The kids are excited.”
Goalie Milan Angyalfi is hot for Kents Hill, posting shutouts in the last two games, the win over Falmouth in the regular-season finale and a 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Bangor on Saturday.
“It’s his confidence, right? He’s seeing the puck well, and we’re doing a good job preventing shots in close,” Desmarais said.
Offensively, the Huskies are led by Alex Gadbois, whose 27 goals are second in Class A, and who leads the team with 42 points.
Falmouth is led by senior goalie Brandon White, who has a 1.92 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. Tracy said White went through a minor slump as he battled illness, but he was sharp in the 5-1 quarterfinal win over St. Dominic, making 23 saves.
“We saw in the first round of the playoffs, he was what he’d been earlier in the season and throughout his career,” Tracy said.
Cale Hanson leads the Navigators with 12 goals and 13 assists.
Lewiston defeated Thornton Academy, 4-3, in the lone regular-season meeting on Jan. 4. The Blue Devils advanced with a come-from-behind quarterfinal victory over the Marshwood co-op team last Thursday. Cam Plourde (15 goals, 24 assists) notched a hat trick in the win, with two goals coming on the power play. Aizyk Laliberte leads Class A with 29 goals for Lewiston, and has 13 assists for a team-high 42 points.
Thornton Academy is the hottest offensive team remaining. The Trojans beat the Westbrook/Windham co-op 11-0 in the quarterfinals and scored 11 goals against the Portland co-op in their regular-season finale. Trent Lesieur (16-24-40) and Jake Skillings (21-19–40) lead the Trojans in scoring. Goalie Drew Johnson has a 1.76 goals-against average and .916 save percentage, with four shutouts.
REGIONAL FINALS
Class B South opponents Cheverus/Yarmouth and Gorham met once in the regular season, a 2-0 Cheverus/Yarmouth win on Feb. 8. That game was Gorham’s last loss, and the Rams have allowed just five goals in the five games since.
“They’re a very good skating team. They have a couple guys who can put the puck in the net,” Cheverus/Yarmouth coach Dave St. Pierre said of Gorham. “They’re a little on the younger side, but still a team that will challenge us offensively.”
Landan Anctil (11-17–28) and Stephen Connolly (19-9–28) lead Gorham in scoring. Chris Chesebro has been strong in net for the Rams, with a 1.82 goals-against average and .921 save percentage. The young Rams needed time to become comfortable with varsity hockey, coach Shawn Sullivan said.
“We’re a young group. We don’t have huge numbers, but we have the right guys,” Sullivan, who won a regional title with Gorham as a senior in 2014, said. “(Cheverus/Yarmouth) has got a lot of experience. They have great goaltending, great coaching and a ton of depth. It’s a good test for us, but I think we’re up to it.”
Cheverus/Yarmouth goalie Ethan Tucker has two shutouts in his past four games, and carries a 1.04 GAA and .948 save percentage into the regional final. Tucker has a strong defensive group in front of him, led by Owen Cheever (11-19–30) and Colby Carnes (10-14–24), who have been two-way sparkplugs.
Wednesday’s Class B North final is a rematch of a John Bapst’s 3-1 win on Jan. 10. Messalonskee’s Owen Kirk, who leads the state in scoring with 43 and and 24 assists for 67 points, missed that game with an injury, coach Dennis Martin said. The Eagles haven’t shown any fatigue following Saturday’s late night win over the Cony co-op in the semifinals.
“They were pretty sharp at practice (Monday) morning,” Martin said. “These guys are just doing all the little things well. Everybody’s just stepping up their game.”
Martin said defenseman Denny Martin, his son, is likely to remain out due to the broken elbow he suffered midway through the season. John Bapst is led by Will Bourgeois (24-15–39) and Nick Needham (13-26–39).
