LOVELL — A proposal to change a zoning ordinance was sent back to the Planning Board for further work during Saturday’s annual town meeting.

Several residents in attendance voiced displeasure with the final article on the warrant, which proposed changes to the rules regarding piers, docks, wharfs, bridges and other structures and uses extending over or beyond the normal high-water line of a water body or within a wetland.

The changes, proposed by the Planning Board following a public hearing in January, included the allowable length and width of docks and piers.

The Planning Board will likely forward a new proposal to next year’s town meeting.

The 97 voters at the meeting went against the recommendations by the Select Board and Budget Committee and voted to fund Stoneham Rescue Service the same $15,000 as last year. The rescue service had requested $30,000, but Lovell officials had recommended that no tax money be used. Stoneham has reportedly had manpower issues with their rescue vehicles, forcing Lovell to rely more on Fryeburg to provide ambulance service. Residents, however, matched last year’s funding to help the Stoneham service stay afloat as it worked through its staffing issues.

All other issues on the 88-article warrant passed easily, including the purchase of a new pumper tanker for the Fire Department, as well as a loader and an excavator. The latter two items will be purchased using excise tax revenue.

Residents agreed with town officials to place all paving projects on hold for one year to help limit the property tax increase. The $1.6 million budget is increasing by 1.65%.

John Jones was reelected to the Select Board, while Savannah Sessions, who filled in and completed a term on the Maine School Administrative District 72 board, was elected Saturday to serve a three-year term of her own. Courtney Burks will serve as a school board alternate.

John Bliss served as the moderator.
