BETHEL — “We had a lot of winter season success in our sports programs,” said SADD-44 Superintendent Mark Kenney at a Feb. 24 school board meeting.
He said, alpine and Nordic [middle school] teams competed over break, finishing their season at states. Of 12 teams in the alpine division the girls finished first in the giant slalom, third place in the slalom and overall second place. The individual “Ski-Meister,” said Kenney, was 7th grader Gwen Stack who won second place overall in both Nordic and alpine.
In the Nordic competition eight teams competed. The girls finished third place in freestyle, second place in classic and third place overall.
The boys alpine team were second place winners (of 12 teams) in giant slalom and took third place overall. The Nordic team was third place for freestyle, classic and overall.
The combined girls alpine and Nordic took first place at States and the boys took second place at States.
Senior Jocelyn Nivus returned from the state meet with a fourth place medal. “She did well at the MVC [Mountain Valley Conference] meet, too,” said Athletic Director Gail Wight.
Telstar High School senior, Ella Akers took third place in the Nordic both classic and freestyle. She was fifth place overall at States and a fifth and 6th place in MVC.

Basketball
The Telstar boys basketball team made it all the way to the semi-final round in Augusta before losing to St. Dom’s. “They were a fun team to watch. they played so well together it was so smooth to watch,” said Wight. “Brody [Morgan] stood out as a leader. They had such a good year, its hard to pick out anyone,” said Wight.
“Even the girls learned a lot and they stuck it out for the whole season,” said Wight.
“I’m very proud of their efforts, how they represent our school, our town and themselves. We are pretty lucky for a small community to have such success and … we finally have snow,” said Kenney.
