Seventy-five students who speak French will perform Thursday during a celebration of Franco-American history and culture at the Franco Center at 46 Cedar St. in Lewiston.
Students from L’École Française du Maine, which is translated The French School of Maine, in South Freeport will tell the story of Lewiston’s Franco-American heritage through the characters of lions, bears, migratory birds and moose.
The wise lion introduces the chapters of Franco-American history. The chickadee represents the migration of Acadians and French Canadians. The bear symbolizes the industrious Franco-Americans working in factories and the moose embodies resilience and adaptability, bridging Francophone and American cultures.
“Le Coeur de Lewiston-Maine,” which is translated “The Heart of Maine,” is an original play by Jennifer Lemaire.
The performance will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Franco Center. Members of the audience are asked to arrive at 11 a.m. for a brief introduction at 11:15 a.m.
