LEWISTON — A local man was arrested and jailed Wednesday after being charged with arson for setting a vehicle on fire early in the morning on Lincoln Street.

Jason Hunter Lewiston Police Department

Jason Hunter, 40, was charged with arson and violating conditions of release related to earlier, unrelated charges.

The fire for which Hunter was arrested was one of three suspicious fires investigated overnight between March 11 and 12.

Investigators say Hunter set a parked vehicle on fire at Tri-State Insulation at 353 Lincoln St. shortly before 4 a.m.

Fire crews who responded to the blaze made quick work of the fire, which was deemed suspicious.

The fire was investigated by Lewiston police and fire investigators with help from the Office of Maine State Fire Marshal. Police said evidence pointed to Hunter as the suspect and he was located, brought in for questioning and arrested a short time later.

He was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn later Wednesday.

Lewiston fire officials said firefighters responded to three suspicious fires overnight, two of them discovered around abandoned vehicles on Lincoln Street. One fire was out on arrival, officials said, and the other two were extinguished before they could cause serious damage.

All of the fires remained under investigation later Wednesday.
