NEWRY — For the four women who run the show at Newry Town Office, support for one another goes beyond the workplace.

Whether it’s during a public meeting or outside office hours, these public servants say they have each other’s backs.

At the select board meeting on March 5, Town Administrator Loretta Powers advocated for her two deputies. Amy Henley and Laurie Walker, to receive raises. “My thoughts on the deputy clerks are that I would like to put them up to $23 or $24 per hour because they are trained …they are dependable, they are reliable,” Powers said.

Code Enforcement Officer Joelle Corey also voiced her support. “It’s fantastic that we all work well together. If any [of them] get called on a vacation day, they pick up their phone.”

“We all work together. We are all supportive of each other whether it’s in the office or outside the office,” added Corey.

The team shares personal cell phone numbers and run errands for one another, like picking up pharmacy orders. Henley’s 8-year-old son, Eliot, plays soccer with Corey, and the group jokes that any complaints from residents are likely to come from Corey’s side of the building. Walker affectionately called the “Label Lady” is excited about the new office shredder. She jokes, “they like to remind me all the time that I’m from Massachusetts.”

“We have each other’s backs. Whether it’s a personal issue we’re going through or something else, we can come in here and let it all out and vent. It stays in within these four walls. Or if it’s something professional, like today, we also will advocate for each other,” said Corey.

On Jan. 10, Henley asked Powers and Walker if either would be willing to babysit Eliot so she could enjoy an anniversary dinner with her husband, Ethan. Henley laughs as she recalls Eliot’s fun evening with Powers. “She took him to dinner at the Sunday River Brew Pub with her brother and sister. When we came home, Eliot and Powers had decorated our bedroom with hearts and confetti.”
