DEAR SUN SPOTS: What is the proper way to dispose of single-use batteries such as AAA, AA, C, D, etc. I hesitate to place them in the regular trash but driving to the dump/recycle center for 12 little batteries seems silly. Is there a place that accepts them?

Thank you, Sun Spots, for being our go-to for the answers. — No name, no town

ANSWER: From the maine.gov web site (https://www.maine.gov/dep/waste/recycle/battery.html): “Nonrechargeable or single-use batteries (including alkaline and “classic” general purpose or heavy duty batteries) can be recycled, but there is not currently a free recycling program available in Maine.

“To recycle your single-use batteries, search the internet for “battery recycling services” to find a service that best meets your needs. Small quantities may be safely and legally disposed of in normal household trash.

“Never dispose of batteries in fire since they could explode. If you have a large number of nonrechargeable batteries, contact your local waste disposal service, municipal officials, or check into one of the mail-in programs that will accept batteries for recycling.

“Button cell batteries (mercuric oxide, silver oxide, etc.) should not go in the trash. Instead, they should be recycled or taken to a household hazardous waste collection center.”

That being said, Staples at 89 Union St. in Auburn accepts single-use batteries, according to Call 2 Recycle (https://www.call2recycle.org/locator/, 753-0779.

However, if your batteries are damaged in any way, please throw them in the trash only.

Readers, please share the information if you know of other places where single-use batteries can be recycled.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you have any information about Luiggi’s in Lewiston? It was reported that it had been bought and lots of renovations seemed to happen, but still no reopening. I would love to go back! – Elizabeth, no town

ANSWER: I haven’t been able to find anything out yet, so I am asking the wonderful Sun Spots community if anyone has any verified information to share.
