HEBRON — With two new selectmen elected at Hebron’s March 15 annual town meeting, the Board of Selectmen chose one, Butch Asselin, to be its new chairman during its March 24 business meeting.

Asselin was nominated by the other incoming board member, Joseph Chretien. Asselin and Chretien join Elizabeth Olsen, who was reelected to her third term in 2024.

Asselin replaces Gino Valeriani, whose term expired this year. Chretien replaces Derek Pike, who resigned ahead of town meeting.

Selectmen then tackled annual routine business – appointing James Trundy as its fire chief, Richard Deans as first deputy and Charles Hall as second deputy.

Selectmen also discussed the management letter from RHR Smith & Company, issued following its 2023 financial audit. Olsen confirmed that Hebron’s contracted accounting firm Blue Star Accounting & Advising of Lewiston, is managing its finances according to RHR Smith’s direction.

Blue Star was hired to do Hebron’s accounting last year after its treasurer position went unfilled. It will continue services at least until a town administrator is hired; after that financial responsibilities will be assigned to the new employee.

Voters authorized the Select Board to create the position at last month’s town meeting. It is currently posted on Hebron’s website and through the Maine Municipal Association.

Until an administrator is hired, selectmen will continue to split oversight of town departments. Asselin will manage affairs at Hebron’s town office, Olsen will be responsible for transfer station operations and Chretien will oversee the highway department.

In addition to adding a town administrator, Hebron currently has three planning board vacancies and is hiring for a part-time transfer station attendant.
