AUBURN — Officials are trying to determine the cause of a fire Thursday night at Dragan Field Disc Golf at 436 Foster Road.

The fire originated in the front area of the top floor, which was unoccupied and under construction, according to Auburn Fire Inspector David O’Connell, who was at the property Friday.

Dragan Field Disc Golf is on the bottom floor and was heavily damaged.

O’Connell said he credits smoke alarms for alerting the two residents in an apartment in the building, allowing them to escape uninjured and with their cat.

The first crews on scene Thursday reported that the building was fully engulfed. Crews from Poland also responded to help battle the flames.

The fire was reported under control within minutes of the Auburn Fire Department’s arrival.

Auburn Deputy Fire Chief Matt Fifield said the building sustained damage from fire, water and smoke, although the full extent had not been determined.

The business is owned by Scott Connell.

O’Connell, the city fire inspector, said that the owners are talking with the city to explore erecting a temporary structure to keep the business operating until the building can be fixed.

The business typically stores discs, bags, baskets, apparel and other items related to disc golf in the building that burned, according to the Dragan company website.
