“Members of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the state of Maine will gather in Lewiston, Saturday, Apr. 26, for the first time since the society’s founding in 1901. The occasion will be the group’s Spring meeting, scheduled to open with a social hour at 11:30 a.m. at the Steer House, to be followed by a luncheon. Presiding at the event will be the society’s governor, Robert L. Stevens of Peaks Island. The guest speaker will be Marius B. Peladeau of Monmouth, project director for the Maine League of Historical Societies and Museums.”

“Company officials announced impending layoffs at the Mead paper mill [in Rumford] Friday, but just how big those cuts will be, and in what areas, has yet to be determined. Spokeswoman Susan Parella said the mill is making a ‘major change’ in the way it does business and evaluating the need for each position, both hourly and salaried. She said the exact number of people to be effected would be known in the next few weeks. ‘It’s part of our continued goal to sharpen our focus on coated paper,’ she said.”
