100 years ago: 1925

“William Holman and Ernest Gullifer, drug clerks at the Riker Jaynes (Liggett’s) store, Lewiston, pleaded not guilty to charges of single sale of intoxicating liquor, Friday morning in the Lewiston municipal court. The hearings were continued to next Thursday, that the state and defense might have time to analyze several bottles of the tonic ‘Old Monticello,’ alleged to have been purchased by two Federal officials. They were held in $500 bonds in the case, on their personal recognizance.”

50 years ago: 1975

“A farmer’s nightmare turned into a cheese-lover’s dream as Maine dairy farmers trucking tons of mozzarella and Vermont cheddar cheese made from milk  they couldn’t sell last spring came to Lewiston for Food Day ’75 today. Four tons of cheese was on sale from the back of a truck in the lot near Lewiston’s Canal Street Liquor Store. Nearby, another truck sold plastic bags of ground beef-two tons of it, while a third vehicle, loaded with Maine potatoes kept a lonely vigil.”

25 years ago: 2000

“The Twin Cities are rated one of the 10 best walks in Maine.

“Not a lot of people know that because we’re too busy zooming from place to place in our cars, but it’s true.

“The Androscoggin River and the cities’ skylines make good scenery and people ought to take the time to hop out of their cars once in a while and take a brisk walk to Lewiston’s Railroad Park, grab a pair of binoculars and stroll through the Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, or pack lunch and climb Mount David on College Street.

“Plans are under way to construct a riverwalk between Auburn and Lewiston, a bicycle loop on College Street and Central Avenue, and a pedestrian connector at Franklin Pasture, providing opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists to see the cities without a windshield interfering with the view.”
